According to the World Health Organization, about 295,000 women died during and following pregnancy and childbirth in 2017 and 5.3 million children died within their first 5 years of life in 2018. Timmy Global Health provides resources for cost-effective interventions as well as access to education to improve maternal and child health.

Timmy’s Maternal and Child Health Programs are aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 3: to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages.

We do this by focusing on initiatives that reduce the global maternal mortality ratio, end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age, and expand access to sexual and reproductive health-care services.

The most common direct causes of maternal injury and death are excessive blood loss, infection, high blood pressure, unsafe abortion, and obstructed labor, while preterm birth complications are the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age. Furthermore, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death for adolescent girls globally.

Adolescent mothers (ages 10–19 years) face higher risks of eclampsia, puerperal endometritis, and systemic infections than women aged 20 to 24 years, and babies of adolescent mothers face higher risks of low birth weight, preterm delivery, and severe neonatal conditions. (source: WHO & UN)

Through this work, we hope to see measurable improvement in health outcomes for maternal, infant, adolescent, and child health through preventative and capacity building initiatives that align with the assessed and expressed needs of the communities.
