Q: How and why was Timmy Global Health founded?
A: Timmy Global Health was founded in 1997 by Dr. Charles Dietzen (Dr. Chuck) after working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, India. “I didn’t want to add the layers of bureaucracy that can come from philanthropic organizations,” says Dr. Chuck, “but I knew first-hand there are a great number of groups doing vital work that need support. So we established Timmy Global Health as a resource clearinghouse for partner organizations around the world. We serve the underserved by activating the youth, empowering them to make a difference in the world and helping those young people discern if they are truly called to the medical profession as doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists and more.”

A: We are always interested in medical professional volunteers! Our university chapters do the majority of recruitment for their respective medical brigades, however we are happy to put you in touch if you are interested in a particular brigade. A: Because our medical brigades focus on primary care (general medicine), we utilize:

If you are comfortable practicing general medicine in an international setting, we are happy to have you on a brigade team—no matter what specialty you are trained in! Resident physicians are welcome.
If you are not a practitioner, registered nurse, or pharmacist but think your professional skills could be helpful on an international medical brigade, let us know. Please contact our Programs Coordinator with questions or concerns at kathy@timmyglobalhealth.org.

A: Maybe. Timmy Global Health does not currently offer open brigade opportunities for students not affiliated with one of our university chapters. Nonetheless, we are interested in expanding to more universities and understand that true inspiration only comes from direct involvement with our work. If you are interested in starting a Timmy chapter at your university or are interested in learning more about Timmy Global Health’s work, there may be opportunities for you to travel on a medical brigade. Timmy makes a concerted effort to send only seriously interested students on its brigades. For more information, please contact the organization’s Programs Coordinator at kathy@timmyglobalhealth.org.
